Lil’ Laurel Learn & Work group
Lil' Laurels meet once a week to give our youngest children (ages 0 – 3) two hours of communal play & learning while also encouraging independence. It also introduces them to a Montessori environment.
Even if your child seems too young, we’d love for them to join us! Our littlest ones learn from the toddlers, and toddlers love teaching the babies new skills. It’s also a great time for parents to learn from one another and share experiences.
Please note: Each child’s parent/guardian must stay for the class’s entirety. Parents/guardians are responsible for all diapers/feeding/etc.
Contact us for more information and to be added to the Lil' Laurels e-mail list.
Children's Community Garden
Mountain Laurel's children's garden is a fun opportunity for children and parents alike to explore the interconnection between chemistry, botany, art, and community.
Created through a partnership with the City of Thomas and funded in part through a mini-grant from the Tucker Community Foundation, the children's garden was started over 5 years ago. Since that time, the garden continues to grow, and it also provides the stage for a Spring curriculum for the elementary students at the Montessori Learning Center.
From lessons on seed germination to home-grown aquaponics and bee habitats, a wide breadth and depth of topics are covered each year through a curriculum designed by Mountain Laurel Learning Cooperative volunteers and through the use of local guest lecturers.
In 2018, thanks to a partnership with Potomac Highlands Food and Farm Initiative and the City of Thomas, the garden is set to double its square footage with the creation of the Upper Elementary's market ready garden. A student-led project designed to explore construction, agriculture, marketing, and management, this integrates real-life gardening and decision making skills while spending valuable time out-of-doors.
Summer camp is open to the entire community. Registration will be filled on a first come, first serve basis.
In 2018, Mountain Laurel offered 3 Summer camp options:
Spanish Immersion camp (ages 7-14)
Exploring Practical Life in Nature camp (ages 7-12)
Geometry in Nature camp (ages 3-6)
